What to wear on Mount Titlis
Wear a windproof jacket, a warm midlayer, gloves and closed shoes, in every season. The Titlis top station stands at 3,020 metres above Engelberg, and the MeteoSwiss station at 3,045 metres records an average daily high of 6.1°C in July and −6.3°C in January. Engelberg village, thirty minutes below, is around 1,015 metres and far warmer.
Two attractions decide your packing list
The Titlis Cliff Walk begins at 3,041 metres. It is 100 metres long, hangs 500 metres above the valley floor, and is completely exposed to the wind — the reason a jacket that blocks wind matters more here than raw insulation. The glacier cave is the other one: it is cut into the ice and never rises above −1°C, so the hat and gloves you thought you could leave in the car come out again.
What to wear in summer
Normal trousers, a warm midlayer and a light waterproof, windproof shell. Add gloves, a hat and sunglasses in your bag. Even on a July day when Engelberg feels like summer, the top station is around 6°C before you factor in the wind on the Cliff Walk.
What to wear in winter
An insulated jacket or a shell with a thick midlayer underneath, thermal socks, waterproof gloves, an ear-covering hat, and sunglasses or goggles. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV, which the World Health Organization says almost doubles your exposure, so sunglasses and sunscreen are not optional even on grey days.
Footwear
Closed shoes with grip. The walkways and the cave floor can be icy, and the short walk between the Rotair cable car and the viewing terraces crosses packed snow. Trainers are fine in good conditions; boots are better when it is cold or in fresh snow.
Do you need ski pants on Titlis?
Not for sightseeing. The Cliff Walk, the Ice Flyer chairlift and the glacier cave are all short, standing activities, and ski pants are uncomfortably warm on the journey up. If you are heading to the snow park at Titlis Glacier Park for tubing or sledging, waterproof trousers earn their place.
